Taupiri History | Print |

Township on the east bank of the Waikato River, at the southern foot of Taupiri Mountain, within the North Waikato District, on State Highway One 8km south-east of Huntly, 8km north-east of Ngaruawahia, 26km north-west of Hamilton. There in Taupiri is a licensed Tavern, Primary School. Farming and Coal mining also an addition.

A mission station was established within the Maori settlement at Kaitotehe, home of the Chief of the Waikato Tribes, Te Wherowhero (King Potatau), on the West Bank of the Waikato River, opposite Taupiri, by the CMS (Anglican) missionary Benjamin Yates Ashwell, in the 1830s. The mission school there was considered one of the finest in the country and received annual grants from the governor's fund until the outbreak of war in the Waikato in 1863 when Ashwell had to withdraw to Auckland. Takes its name from Taupiri Mountain.
