Te Kauwhata History | Print |
Township on the north-west of Lake Waikare on the east side of the Waikato River, within the North Waikato District, just off State Highway One, 4km north of Rangiriri, 19km north of Huntly, 80km south-east from Auckland. Te Kauwhata is well known for farming, fruitgrowing and highly regarded winemaking.

Near by is the site of one of the major battles of the Waikato Wars - see Rangiriri. The name means
Te: the, Kau: empty, Whata: storehouse, commemorating an occasion when the local hapu (sub-tribe) found itself with insufficient provisions to feed visitors.
